Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
