Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
